About Vidya Sansthana Trust

VST was founded on a conviction: that the most urgent design problems of our time cannot be solved by designers alone — and that design education must be fundamentally reimagined.

VST was founded on a conviction: that the most urgent design problems of our time cannot be solved by designers alone — and that design education must be fundamentally reimagined.

Our Origin

Vidya Sansthana Trust emerged from conversations among educators, practising designers, and community workers who noticed the same pattern: graduates of design schools, however technically proficient, consistently lacked the capacity to work with complexity — with communities they did not understand, with ecologies they had not inhabited, with problems that resisted neat framing.

The Trust was registered to address this structural gap — not by criticising design education from the outside, but by creating parallel, complementary experiences that operate in the real world and return learners transformed.

Our Philosophy

Two thinkers animate our work above all others. Christopher Alexander taught us that design is fundamentally about wholeness — about nurturing the living patterns that make places feel alive, cared for, and human. Patrick Geddes taught us that you must first survey and inhabit a place before you presume to intervene in it.

Together, they form our methodological spine: survey, feel, understand — then, and only then, design.

Our Team

VST is governed by a small board of trustees drawn from architecture, graphic design, education, craft, and environmental science. We maintain a lean secretariat and work through an ever-expanding network of mentor-practitioners, institutional partners, and community collaborators.
